The gumbo limbo spiraling whitefly, also known as rugose spiraling whitefly, is a problem throughout South Florida. It is a slow-moving form of whitefly that infests mainly landscape plants such as gumbo limbo, banana and palms.

Unlike its more destructive relative, the ficus whitefly, the gumbo limbo will not kill large established trees or plants. However, it can kill young, new plants, as well as others that are already unhealthy or compromised. It can also seriously degrade the aesthetic appearance of plants and trees, foster mold and leave damaging secretions on cars, pool decks and patio furnishings.

The most prominent sign of a gumbo limbo spiraling whitefly infestation is white, waxy material on the bottom of leaves. This serves as a protective coating for whitefly larvae and young flies. Heavily infested plants can become almost completely coated with this material. In addition, honeydew excrement deposited on the plants also fosters the growth of plant mold that is harmful to leaves.

Homeowners can take DIY measures such as washing off plants with a strong spray of water to remove some of the whitefly infestation. However, for control of more extensive cases the services of a professional pest control company are recommended. A pest control professional will evaluate the infestation and usually elect to apply a systemic insecticide formulated for the gumbo limbo spiraling whitefly. This may be applied to the soil as a liquid drench, in granular form or as a tablet.
