Termite Infestation: Five Signs They’re In Your Treasure Coast Home

You should be aware of the potential harm caused by a termite infestation on your property. If you have a stick-built home, termites are the top threat to its structural integrity. Here’s what you need to know about termites and identifying a termite infestation.

Types of termites

  • Subterranean termites live underground. They construct colonies in the dirt around your home and can be found in every state in the U.S. except Alaska.
  • Drywood termites can be found living in the very structure of your home. This species is most active in hot, humid climates such as Florida’s.

While you might not care to identify which type of termite infestation is around your home, pest control services need to know the difference to treat the swarm properly.

Signs of termite damage

Work with a trusted pest control professional to identify these signs of an infestation:

  • Hollow wood: Termites feed on the inside of wood where you can’t see the damage. However, a hollow sound when you tap on the wood is a good indication of termite damage.
  • Groups of swarmers and discarded wings: The swarmers are the reproductive portion of the termite population. If you see winged termites or piles of discarded wings, contact a pest control service right away.
  • Cracked wooden surfaces: Seemingly innocuous slivers near the foundation or along siding, windows and exhaust vents could be large enough for swarmers to enter. Look for and seal any cracks you find.
  • Mud tubes: Termites build mud tubes on exterior surfaces for moisture while looking for food. To remove moisture-rich areas for termites to thrive, store mulch and wood chips away from the walls of your home.
  • Frass: Wood-colored droppings called frass indicate that termites are out and about. Keep your gutters clear to prevent providing cellulose materials for termites to munch on.
